Organic food and Made in Italy
The organic field is constantly expanding, with products ranging from food, to cosmetics, to household products and clothing.
As for organic cosmetics, among the certification bodies of ecological, organic and natural cosmetics we find brands such as Ecocert and Cosmebio (France), BIDH (Germany) and ICEA (Italy) according to the Cosmos standard: environmental and animal rights requirements are required, as well as well-defined percentages of biological and natural components and any residual petrochemicals. Among these we find bath products, body care products and numerous beauty products.
In organic clothing we find only natural textile fibers (cotton, wool, linen, hemp, silk): the GOTS certification, for example, is applied to clothing composed of organic fibers for at least 95% of the entire fabric (even if some garments contain 70% organic fibers, but in this case it must be clearly indicated on the label). However, high standards of respect for the environment and workers must be respected.
In the organic world, the main role is played by organic agriculture: it is a technique of cultivation and production of food that respects the natural life cycles and the earth ecosystem.
Italy is at the forefront in Europe for the export of products of organic origin. According to a research conducted by Ispra, the numbers speak of “a turnover across borders of more than 1 billion euros a year. An amount that represents more than a third of the total turnover of Italian organic “.
Safety with organic food products
Since 1991, organic farming has been governed by the European Union, which establishes the rules to be respected and the cultivation criteria.
On the basis of European directives, only products subjected to careful controls are recognized as organic.
For this purpose, control bodies have been created, private bodies that have the task of verifying that producers actually apply the EU directives.
The organic is therefore controlled from the seed to the final product and, if everything has been carried out in compliance with the rules, it presents the new European logo of organic products on the label.
The European logo and the legislation
The label that distinguishes and helps to recognize products of biological origin, also known as “Euro-leaf”, is mandatory starting from 1 July 2010, thanks to EC Reg. No. 271/2010.
The logo represents a stylized leaf composed of 12 white stars on a green background, which symbolically represents the union between Europe and Nature.
To receive the organic logo, the product must:
- have at least 95% of the ingredients produced from organic farming;
- comply with the rules of the control and certification system;
- report the name of the producer, preparer or seller and the code number of the certification body that carried out the control of the last operation before being put on sale.
