The black chickpeas from the Lucanian hills are a native Lucanian variety, with a small black seed.
They are grown in the upper Val d’Agri in the Sarconi area.
It is a type of legume very common in Mediterranean cuisine and with very ancient origins.In fact, it dates back to the time of the Egyptians and the Greeks.
Chickpeas are mentioned, for example, in some points of Galen’s work “On the properties of food” (180 AD):
the doctor of Greek origin accurately described the properties of chickpeas, also attributing aphrodisiac benefits to them.
The ancient Romans also used them often, mostly after fried them.

Ciuoto is a dwarf Borlotto bean, with a not very large round-ovoid seed with a white-cream background with red-winey streaks.
This ecotype of Sarconi bean is the best known and perhaps the oldest: highly appreciated on the market for its almost non-existent skin after cooking.
When used in the kitchen, it redeems itself from the dialectal form “Ciuoto” – in Italian “Cretino” – and becomes a “QUEEN” food for its various uses and for the excellent qualities of taste, flavor and cooking.

BELISARIO farm
Belisario Farm is in a secluded corner of Lucania, in the Agri valley. Always bright as it did when in the Pleistocene era it shone through the waters of a lake, in Sarconi.
The small BELISARIO farm stands in a happy place for climate and perfumes.
The lands that constitute it and that compete for space with the surrounding hills, all sloping down from the Sirino (2005m above sea level).
They stretch out flat and undulating along the path of the Sciaura.
A river blessed for the quality of the water of constant flow, fresh and not very calcareous waters, necessary for the most prized crops of Sarconi IGP beans.
The original nucleus of the company, certainly smaller, suitable for a Curtense-type economy, historically dates back to the end of the 19th century.
Only recently with his grandfather Domenico, his son Mario and with the current operator, his grandson Domenico, did he find reasons and motivations for a production impulse that aims above all at quality.
Quality and variety of beans
Quality obtained through the meticulous and loving research of the finest ecotypes dating back to the ancient bean crops of the Alta Val d’Agri area.
Very fertile and water-rich soils that allow farmers to produce two unique and rare crops a year.
Especially beans that need a lot of water and a lot of sun.
Ingredients of which this land is abundant.
Beans, these jewels, which since the early 1980s have found political attention, scientific support accredited by universities throughout Europe until the recognition, first in Basilicata, of the I.G.P. (Protected Geographical Indication).
Today the BELISARIO company is certified by AGROQUALITA ‘, a control body for PGI accredited by MIPAF.
It produces and packages 20 ecotypes, seeds handed down from father to son.
And which, deservedly saved from a sure disappearance from the biological cycle as well as from economic and cultural memory.
All these ecotypes of beans have been returned not only to a correct and healthy diet; but also to the pleasure and pride of savoring unique and unmistakable products.
Products that are rooted in the Lucanian and peasant culture of the Val d’Agri.
Valley located between the Lucanian Apennines where beans and legumes find that essential mixture for their production.
