The working of clay for the production of jars, jars, amphorae, bricks and tiles has a very ancient tradition in Italy and especially in Tuscany near Florence.
From clay to terracotta
The land of Impruneta is very rich in marl, called “antifreeze terracotta”.
A particular type of clay that gives the terracotta special characteristics of resistance and color, and above all makes it unalterable in the cold. Galestro, a basic element for the production of Impruneta terracotta, is extracted from open-air quarries near Impruneta, near Florence, in the valleys of the Ema and Greve rivers.
The extraction area is limited (about 200 km2) and for this reason the value of the material is remarkably preserved.
Geologically it belongs to the allochthonous whole, more simply it is a land consisting of calcareous marl and scaly clays, limited to certain areas of Impruneta and Greve.
Among the most particular chemical components we mention iron oxide, which determines the particular shade of red of the finished product.
Calcium salts and carbonates give the product characteristics of permeability and porosity that are particularly important for earthen containers.
A fundamental feature for garden and flower pots but also for oil jars because they prevent water stagnation and ensure good ventilation of the contents.
The extracted clay, stored in the sun, must be selected and separated from numerous waste materials: this operation can only be manual.
Thanks to the grinding, with the help of heavy crushing machinery, a more or less granular powder is obtained, which is then passed through a sieve and stored in silos.
At this stage, the mixing machine and above all the skill and experience of the craftsman form an indispensable whole: the proportion of water intervenes to obtain a good plastic result.
The well-equipped laboratory allows you to make jars, tiles, statues, planters, vases, basins, chimneys, custom bricks, bas-reliefs, ornaments of various kinds by hand and in a personalized way.
